Lip Blush Ghosting Phase: Why Has My Lip Colour Disappeared?

Have you recently had lip blush and noticed that your beautiful lip colour seems to have disappeared? Don't panic!

You may be experiencing the lip blush ghosting phase, a normal part of the healing process that can leave your lips looking much lighter than expected.

If you're worried your treatment hasn't worked, here's what you need to know.

What Is the Lip Blush Ghosting Phase?

The lip blush ghosting phase is when the pigment appears to fade significantly or disappear temporarily after your treatment.

Immediately after lip blush, your lips may look bright, defined and more intensely coloured.

As the skin begins to heal and any flaking or peeling settles, the colour can appear very faint - sometimes almost invisible.

This happens because the lips are renewing themselves after the treatment. The fresh surface skin can temporarily make the pigment underneath look less noticeable.

Why Has My Lip Blush Colour Disappeared?

There are several reasons why your lip blush may look lighter during healing:

  • Skin renewal: New skin forms as the treated area heals, temporarily affecting how the pigment appears.

  • Peeling and flaking: As the lips shed their healing skin, the colour can look uneven or faded.

  • Pigment settling: The initial colour changes as the skin recovers and the pigment settles.

  • Individual healing: Everyone's skin responds differently, so some people notice a more obvious ghosting phase than others.

The important thing to remember is that your lip blush immediately after treatment is not your final result.

How Long Does the Lip Blush Ghosting Phase Last?

The ghosting phase commonly occurs during the first few weeks of healing, but the timing varies from person to person.

Your colour may gradually become more visible as your lips continue to heal. It can take around 4–6 weeks for the colour to settle, sometimes longer depending on individual healing.

Avoid judging your results too early. Your practitioner can advise when your healed colour should be assessed and whether a follow-up appointment is appropriate.

What Should You Do During the Ghosting Phase?

The best thing you can do is allow your lips to heal naturally.

  • Follow your practitioner’s aftercare instructions.

  • Avoid picking, peeling or scrubbing your lips.

  • Use the recommended aftercare balm as directed.

  • Avoid applying unapproved products to the treated area.

  • Contact your practitioner if you have concerns about your healing.

If you experience worsening pain, increasing swelling, spreading redness or other concerning symptoms, seek medical advice promptly.
